Covering: Lasswade, Polton, Kevock.
The local landmark: Melville Castle, a castellated 1786 mansion now run as a hotel, sits in wooded grounds by the River North Esk.
On the ground: Stone cottages and villas on steep, narrow lanes down into the North Esk valley, where parking close to the door can be tight. Kerbside works well here: have everything at the door and the driver loads.
While you wait for the van: Sir Walter Scott rented a cottage at Lasswade from 1798 and wrote his first original ballads there.
