Covering: Loanhead, Straiton, Paradykes.
The local landmark: The Bilston Glen Viaduct, an 1892 railway viaduct 140 feet above the glen, now carries a walking and cycling path on the edge of town.
On the ground: A compact former mining town of terraces and semis, with modern estates and retail parks at Straiton. Kerbside works well here: have everything at the door and the driver loads.
While you wait for the van: Loanhead's Bilston Glen colliery was one of Scotland's biggest pits and a flashpoint of the 1984 to 1985 miners' strike before closing in 1989.
