Covering: Dalkeith, Eskbank, Newtongrange, Mayfield, Easthouses, Danderhall.
The local landmark: Dalkeith Country Park and the National Mining Museum Scotland at Newtongrange's Lady Victoria Colliery are the district's big landmarks.
Students: Edinburgh College's Midlothian campus is at Eskbank, and Newbattle Abbey College sits in parkland on the edge of Dalkeith.
On the ground: Mostly terraced former mining streets and postwar semis, with large new estates spreading around Dalkeith and Mayfield. Kerbside works well here: have everything at the door and the driver loads.
While you wait for the van: The Borders Railway, the longest new domestic railway built in Britain for over a century, reopened through the district in 2015 with stations at Eskbank and Newtongrange.
